Why Can't Millennials Sleep at Night?
Probably 'cause you can’t put your phone down, ya big dummy!
I (and probably over 90% of Millennials) am no different. Your phone is addicting! Don't even get me started on the anxiety problems that social media is causing...
Anyway...
Your phone and computer screen emit high-energy blue light, which has been linked to sleep problems, especially when digital devices are used just before bedtime. The blue light interacts with the brain and suppresses the body’s natural melatonin release. This interferes with the circadian rhythm (the normal sleep/wake cycle in our brains). When devices are used before bed, the blue light makes us feel more awake, and makes it more difficult to fall asleep. This also decreases the quality and quantity of REM sleep, often considered to be most important in terms of feeling well-rested. What can we do in this case?
Option #1 is simple, though impractical. Stop using digital devices 1 hour before you sleep (who does that? Even my books are on a device now!).
Option #2 is to reach for a pair of stylin' tinted glasses with blue light blocking technology built into the lenses. This is a great all day x all night option.
Option #3 is to go off the grid, delete your all your social media platforms, run away to the amazon to become a Shaman and lead Ayahuasca trips. That last option doesn't sound too bad actually...
